GB Tran’s graphic memoir Vietnamerica is definitely one of the most complex books that I have read, that carries a message I also find very relating. I will be focusing on Vietnamerica as an autoethnography, using the text “Autoethnography: An Overview” by Carolyn Ellis, Tony E. Adams & Arthur P. Bochner, as my analytical lens. Utilizing close and distant reading skills, not only will I be analyzing Vietnamerica as an autoethnography, but I will also complicate the understanding of autoethnography from the Ellis’ text and how it works through the analysis of Vietnamerica. Using evidence from both t texts to better understand each other will be the essence. I will be centering attention on autoethnography and the epiphanies incorporated in the memoir, in order to analyze Vietnamerica.
